Writer's Block: Close Encounters of the Celebrity Kind

Have you ever met a celebrity in real life? Who was it and how did your paths cross?

Hmm, let's see. I guess I've met a few celebrities, though no one really huge.

I met the whole original cast of Avenue Q, got my picture taken with John Tartaglia.

I also met Tamora Pierce twice -- first at a book signing in New York when I was 11, I think. I wore all purple (Alanna's color) and practically peed myself standing in line, I was so nervous. She was a remarkably sweet lady, and personally autographed four or five books for my friends. Then, in the book she autographed for me ("Lioness Rampant") she wrote "You're a good friend!" -- apparently impressed with the fact that I would travel 2 hours and get books signed for my friends.

When I heard she was coming to Philadelphia, I headed a campaign to get her to have dinner with myself and a bunch of the girls from her message board, Sheroes. We went out to Bertucci's. That was also when I met [info]erinpuff in real life for the first -- and only -- time :P It was pretty much the best night of my life. My only regret is the fact that I was a moronic, ditzy 12 year old when it happened.

Best celebrity story, though, comes from when I went to see "The Light in the Piazza" with Lili and Corynn. As you may or may not know, Chris Sarandon -- aka Prince Humperdinck in "The Princess Bride" -- played a supporting role in that. We stood outside the theatre meeting the stars as they emerged (meeting Victoria Clark, a MAJOR Broadway name, in the process). Then, after everyone else left, we saw a man leave and slink by us, baseball cap pulled low over his eyes. "Is that-?" "I don't know, is it?" "I think that's-" We were afraid of bothering him and of possibly being wrong about who it was. I, fortunately, am an obnoxious asshole and finally got up the courage to open my mouth and say "MR. SARANDON???"

He didn't look too happy at being found out, but he was very gracious and autographed our programs and took pictures with us.

I also met Voltaire. The singer, not the philosopher. I always forget this, because I have basically repressed the memory due to trauma. This is my sister's fault.
